Why are people trying to save endangered animals?

Unless we need them for a specific reason, what is the point in saving endangered animals? I mean look at the rhino. It's a pointless animal that plays no real part in the food chain. Saving it would be a waste of time except for hippies. It is not in any way our responsibility to watch out for other animals, so why do we?
