Other than cats and dogs what are good companions for lonely cats?

Our 2 yr old cat hates other cats and our apartment isnt quite big enough for a dog(plus we are not ready to commit to dog walking) we are looking for something he can interact with and not feel so lonely but not something he would just terrorize all day. any suggestions??
