Do misfortunes and illnesses strengthen someones spirit when conquered?

I've seen it go both ways. Some wallow in self-pity and shut their eyes to all that's good in their lives. Others are stronger, or become stronger, and rise above life's slings and arrows. You don't know what may strength lie within a person until they're tested.
