What's the difference between denote (denotation) and connote (connotation)? when do you use each one?

i heard connote refers to the symbolism of an object while denoting something is doing so in the objects actual terms. despite these explanations, i'm having a hard time comprehending when to use them, and i don't even know if i got their meanings right. please help! thanks!
